Good morning and a Warm welcome to all the parents and teachers who are present here on this Wonderful day! Now I am going to share with you few details about Father of our Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

Mohandas Karamchand Ganndhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born on October 2, 1869 to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai Gandhi, in Porbandar, Gujarat. His father was the Diwan of Porbandar and his mother was a religious lady. He did his schooling in Rajkot and he was an average student, who was very shy. He was also a punctual and an obedient student in the school.

He married Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia, when he was only 13-years old. He completed his high school education and went to London for pursuing his college studies and he chose to study law. He then joined the Inner Temple in London and practised as a Barrister. He returned home after few years and started practising in Mumbai. He was not successful, as expected, since he was unable to cross-examine his witnesses. He was offered a job in South Africa, since they were looking for a person from Kathiawari Heritage. He accepted the job and soon after reaching South Africa, he was discriminated due to his colour and was not allowed to sit in the coach with European people.

During his time spent in South Africa, he learnt a lot about Politics and ethics. Due to the discrimination in South Africa, he started fighting for his rights and resisted the discrimination. In few years, he was proclaimed as the National hero, who is a proud recipient of numerous monuments. In the year 1915, Gandhi returned to India, on the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and joined Indian Congress. Later he took the leadership of Indian Congress in 1920 and conducted many mass movements against the British rule in India.

He started many movements including Quit India, Satyagraha, non-violence, non-co-operation etc. He always dressed himself in a cotton cloth and this became his trademark. He led a simple life in Sewagram  and fought for the freedom of our country. He also worked to remove untouchability in India. He believed unity is strength and struggled hard for the uplift of ‘Harijan’, who are group of people belonging to the backward class.

Due to his resistance and continuous protest against British rule over India, British Lords decided to declare freedom to our country. However, there was an outburst of Hindu and Muslim fights and he observed fast in Noakhali, to bring this fight to an end. Even though, there was an occasional peace, this did not last long. During the Independence, the India and Pakistan were partitioned and Hindus, Sikhs migrated to India and Muslims migrated to Pakistan.

Gandhi believed in secularism and wanted India to be a democratic country. He wanted both Hindus and Muslims to live in harmony. Gandhiji, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, on January 30, 1948, shortly after independence, while he was on his way to his evening prayer. He was cremated in the river banks of Yamuna. On his remembrance, October 2, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti and January 20, is celebrated as Martyr day, in India,
