Also known as the Gateway to God, Haridwar is a holy city in Uttarakhand and is regarded one of the 7 holiest Hindu cities. It is one of the first places where the Ganges touches the plains after flowing through the mountains. It is also the entrance to the four major centers in Uttarakhand, namely Kedarnat, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Significance of Haridwar

Haridwar is known for its rich history and it traces back to the Vedic ages. According to the well-known Hindu mythology, Haridwar is the city created with a drop of nectar spilled from kundalini being carried by Garuda after the Samudra Manthan.

Haridwar houses several temples devoted to various deities. Ganga Snan is one of the major attractions in Haridwar. It is believed that a dip in the holy water of Ganges washes away all the sins, according to Hindu belief, and gives a chance to lead a fresh life, despite all the ill deeds and sins.

Tourist Attractions

Harki-Paudi – It is a ghat located on the banks of River Ganga. It was constructed by King Vikramaditya as a tribute to the penance of his brother Brithati to seek divine blssings. Brahmakund is the most pious and sacred of all ghats in Hari ki Paudi. The evening aarti gives the spiritually rewarding and most enchanting experience. After the aarti, diyas are set afloat on the river. The sight of these lamps moving up and down in the water is a soothing experience and it will really leave you spellbound.

Chandi Devi Temple – Built by Kashmir’s king Suchat Singh in 1929, Chandi Devi Temple is devoted to Goddess Chandi.

Mansa Devi Temple – Located over the Bilwa Parvat and offers a unique 360o view of the city, Mansa Devi Temple is a must-visit place if you want all your Mansa or desires to be fulfilled. To reach this temple, you may take a cable car ride to get the most amazing and unforgettable view.

Other Tourist Attractions

Sati Kund – It is another tourist attraction which enjoys cultural and historical importance. According to the legends, it is the place where Sati immolated herself.

Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar – It is the best place for bird watching. Located around 3.5km from the city, it is a bird sanctuary.

Climate and Geography

Emerging from the mountains to touch the plains, the Ganges water is mostly cold and clear, except in rainy season when the soil flows down from the upper regions.  The river flows in a series of channels that are separated from one another, known as a its, and most of these are well wooded. Other small seasonal river streams are Ravi Rao, Ranipur Rao, Pathri Rao, Harnauli Rao, etc.

A major region of the district is forested and Rajaji National Park is located in the bounds of district. Hence it is the best destination for adventure tourists and wildlife lovers. Rajaji can be accessed through various gates. Mohand Gate and Ramgarh Gate are located around 25km from Dehradun, and Ranipur, Motichur, and Chilla Gates are located around 9km from Haridwar. Kunaon Gate is located 6km from Rishikesh and Laldhang Gate is located 25km from Kotdwara.

Covering up to 2360 sq. km, Haridwar district is located in the southwestern region of Uttarakhand. It is located at the altitude of 314m above the sea level, i.e. between Shivalik Hills in the Northeast and North and River Ganga in the South.
