My City Pune is the second largest city in the Maharashtra state. People who have lived in Pune are used to calling it as Poona. The city was called Poona since the British rule. It is the seventh most populated city. It is 560 meters above the sea level and is on the Deccan Plateau. Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and the people living in Pune are rooted and cultured. The city is also known as the ‘Oxford of the East’ because of the various institutions. It is also the city, which has the highest number of the youth population. It is the major educational hub and has a lot of foreign students as well that come and study in Pune. The Badminton game was also developed in Pune and it was earlier called as Poona. It is also the fastest growing cities in the country and is also a youth hub. The city was earlier known as Punawadi in the 13th century.
History
Pune is one of the cities in Maharashtra, which is dominated highly by the Maratha culture. The region was ruled by the Rahstrakuta Dynasty. The Pateleshwar rock was also built during this dynasty. The part of the region was ruled by Seuna Yadavas. In 1599, Pune was ruled by Maloji Bhosale. His grandson Shivaji was the founder of the Maratha Empire. The people of Pune has respect for Shivaji and they still believe in him. The city was ruled by the Marathas and the Mughals and in 1707 the Marathas decided that Poona will be their headquarters. In 1720, Baji Rao ruled the region and stayed in Pune. The city or the region was also ruled by Bajirao Peshwa. In 1818, the British invaded India and ruled the country. Many great leaders like Gopal Krishna Ghokale and Bal Gangadhar Tilak were born in this city and they fought for the independence. The city has gone through a lot of changes after the Independence. It has the National Defence Academy and also the National Chemical Laboratory at Pashan. It serves as the headquarters of the Southern command in the Indian Army. The city also has many IT companies and is also the education hub of India.
Art and Culture
The Hindu culture dominates the city. It also follows the various cultures of the different religion. The people of Pune are Marathas and the main festival of the people living in Pune is the Ganesh Chaturthi. They celebrate it with joy and love and the city lightens up for those ten days.
Language
The dominating language of the city is Marathi, but people do speak Hindi and English as well. Because of so many students and institutes, students from across the country come and study here and hence it is a multi-lingual city.
