Introduction

Manipur is made of two words – Mani and Pur. The literal meaning of Manipur is “The Jeweled Town” and so it is jeweled in every sense of the word. The picturesque landscapes and the most beautiful scenery here makes this place surely very serene and calm. The capital city of Manipur is Imphal and the official language spoken here is English and Manipuri. Manipur is one of the seven sister states and lies in the north east part of India. It shares its borders with three states – Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram. Apart from that Myanmmar lies to the east of Manipur and this international border stretches up to 398 kilometers.

History

Jawaharlal Nehru referred to Manipur as the Jewel of India. Due to its proximity to the border of India, it was invaded by Burmese more often. After the Yandaboo Treaty, Manipur became the important part of India during the British Raj as this treaty marked an end to the Indo-Burma War and established dominance of Brits. Japanese also used Manipur as an entry gate during the WWII but were defeated near Imphal.

It is also believed that the Polo game was originated from Manipur. The locals used to play Pulu here riding the horse and then this game became prominent as British named it as Polo and took it to England.

Economic and Social Status

The natives of this place are very polite and humble. This place is rich in culture and tradition. But in terms of economy, the state is comparatively very poor. The people are majorly dependent on the handloom industry, and Oak Tussar Industry. The other industries found here are Leather, rice mills, bamboo and cane items etc. Wheat, Paddy and Maize are the prominent agricultural items grown here and minerals such as limestone is found here. Wrestling is the prevalent sport here. The famous Manipuris who have made India proud are Irom C Sharmila and Mary Kom.
