Navy is one of the important parts of the defense for any country which have the coastal frontier. For the country like India, the navy has played a vital role in protecting the coastal boundaries of India. Talking from the defense point of view, the government of India has given great emphasis for the navy. India has been vulnerable to many external threats through coastal areas. The threats mainly consist of external attacks, infiltration and smuggling.

However, the Indian Navy has shown a great temperament in protecting the coastal areas.

The history of Indian Navy

• Indian Navy is a well-structured and disciplined branch, whose chief is called Admiral and President of India is the supreme commander of the Indian Navy. Indian navy has a very nice motto, which say’s “Sham No Varna”, which literally means “May the Lord of the Water be auspicious unto us”.
• The naval staff has a very nice blue and white color, showing the audacity and decent face of the Indian Navy. Even before the independence, there were many empires Chola, Yadav, etc. which tried to build the strong naval force.
• However, it was the Maratha Empire, founded by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, made a very strong naval force with the help of KanhojiAngre, to fight the foreign aggression.
• So, Shivaji Maharaj is known as the “Father of the Indian Navy”. After independence, India developed magnificent and disciplined Navy.
• The naval command of India is divided into four main commands, which are western, eastern, southern and northern.

Indian navy and its major Operation

After independence, the first major operation of Indian Navy was seen in the 1961 during the Goa Liberation. During the liberation movement, the Portuguese had fired the Sabarmati, which is a passenger liner. The Indian navy quickly came into action providing the fire support and landing of the Indian troops there. During 1962 Sino-Indian War, the Indian navy had not played any direct action, as the battles were fought mainly on the land. However, the Indian Navy played a defensive role and was full prepared to counter any attack.

The Navy Day in India is celebrated on December 4^th of every year in order to extend our gratitude towards the Navy martial’s. All the soldiers who work on different navy posts are very important to the well being of our country therefore, on every 4^th of December we celebrate the ultimate bravery of our navy officials.
