Introduction
To the west of Kerala, lies an archipelago known as Lakshadweep Islands. These are a group of 36 islands out of which only 10 are inhabited. These islands form a distinct Union Territory. This place is particularly known for its enchanting and enticing flora and fauna and the lush green backdrop along with revitalizing beaches. 93% of the population is Muslim. The people have a carefree attitude and this place is very safe and crime free.
History
Lakshadweep Islands has been a home to the Rajarajendra Chola, who was one of the greatest Chola kings to take over the islands and add them to his expanding territory.This island got explored by many rulers and foreign visitors and travelers, such as Vasco Da Gama after which this place was noted as the hub of maritime trade and then years of tyranny and plunder continued which made them what they are today. Eventually passed on to Tipu Sultan and then to the British in the third Anglo Mysore War.
Economic and Social Status
Most of the people here are involved in coconut farming and fishing. Coconuts and its by-products contribute a lot in the economy of this place. The importance of coconut can be seen from its uses which range from the coir made of coconut husk to the handicrafts to the housing and to the use of coconut in food. Fishing is also done here and the Tuna fish from this place is relished by everyone across the world. The fish is tinned and exported abroad and therefore fishing is also a major part of this place’s economy. Tourism is also emerging as an exciting economic option for people.

Lakshadweep is a great tourist destination and people from all over the world flock this place to enjoy the water sports. The diverse flora and fauna and the marine life here attracts many. There are more than 600 species of Fish, over 80 species of corals and various other species of crabs, lobsters, gastropods, bivalves and birds. The Tourism department has invested a lot for the maintenance and the conservation of the infrastructure, monuments, and beaches. The long coastline provides a great turf for water sports and one can actually indulge in activities such as kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, surfing, scuba diving etc. The main tourist attractions in Lakshadweep are:
