Tripura is one of the smallest states in North Eastern part of India. In terms of landmass, the state comprises of 10,491 km2 area. The state shares its border with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh. The population of Tripura is just 0.3% of the entire country’s population. The name Tripura is derived from ‘Tripui’ dynasty that ruled the region for a long time. Tripura was initially part of a princely state which was later included in the Indian territory after Independence. The state comprises of people majorly from Bengal and indigenous Tripuri ethnicity.
Geography
The state of Tripura is surrounded by other North East Indian states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. The North East Indian states together were referred as “Seven Sisters”. The state is bestowed with high range hills, valley and water fountains. Tripura is also origin land of several rivers that enriches the region like Gumti, Muhuri, Feni, Dhalai, and Longai. The state of Tripura falls under tropical Savannah climate which is characterized by frequent rainfall. Sometime during the monsoon, the uninterrupted rainfall floods the state.
Economy
The state of Tripura is primarily depended on agriculture and forestry. Due to the hilly terrain, the state depends on step agriculture. Rice is the major food crop in the region followed by potato and sugarcane. The state is also bestowed with natural reserves of minerals which are extracted for industrial purposes. The state also is known for horticulture and sericulture. Despite being rich in natural resources, the state of Tripura has high poverty rates with poor infrastructural facilities.
Tourism
Tripura is one of the northeastern states that is known for its natural beauty. Every year the state records huge influx of foreign and domestic tourists. Besides the natural landscapes, the state offers magnificent places to visit. Few of the main tourist places in the region are Ujjayanta Palace, State Museum, Heritage Park, Tribal Museum and GeduMian Mosque. The best time to visit Tripura is from September to March every year.
Sports
The people of Tripura has a major inclination towards cricket and football. The capital city of Tripura holds football championship every year. Apart from football, the state level cricket team participates in the Ranji trophy tournament every year. In the year 2016, a local gymnast Dipa Karmakar became the first ever Indian athlete to qualify for the Olympics.
