Essay on Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places

By smoking at public place, cigarette or bidi is harmful not only for smoker, but also for the people around, especially those who are not smoking. Smokers suffer a lot of health issues. A cigarette contains up to 4000 types of harmful chemicals and 43 of them cause cancer. A smoke contains up to 20000 ppm of carbon monoxide. It is diluted to 400 to 500 while inhaling. It removes oxygen from hemoglobin and causes impaired nervous system, pulmonary and cardiac diseases. It may also cause heart attacks.

Cigarette also contains ammonia and different other hydrocarbons which are responsible to cause respiratory infections, asthma, and lung cancer. It contains dust particles which may cause eye irritation, emphysema and cancer. It contains nicotine which is very addictive and triggers the brain quickly. It also raises blood pressure, constricts blood vessels, and gives a small jolt to the central nervous system. Over time, it also causes reproductive disorders.

Smoking is harmful to your health in different ways. It has a lot of ill effects. Smoking causes severe type of coughing, long-standing bronchitis, quick exhaustion, and emphysema of lungs. It also causes loss of memory power and increases blood pressure. It may also cause sudden death in young individuals due to heart attack. There is also a risk of cancer of lungs, mouth, esophagus, larynx, bladder, and pancreas.

Due to the habit of smoking, pregnant moms also are at risk of low birth weight of their child and there is also a risk of child’s death either after or before birth. Passive smoking may cause bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma in kids.

Is Smoking Banned in Public Venues?

Smoking is banned across the country in public venues as per the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008 and Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). Smoking is prohibited in public places like restaurants, shopping malls, bars, public transports, offices, airports, railway stations, hospitals, theatres, libraries, banquet halls, parks, etc. However, smoking is not banned in private cars and on streets. Non-smokers find cigarette smoke very uncomfortable. Their head starts to ache if someone puffs out around them.
