Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal is amongst the four metropolitan cities in India. It was earlier known as Calcutta and the name was later changed by the government of India. It is the third largest metropolitan city in India and also one of the most productive city, after Delhi and Mumbai. The GDP of the city ranges from 60 to 150 Million Dollars. The city has a unique culture and a unique vibe to it. My city Kolkata is rooted and follows the culture and traditions completely. The people living in this city are educated and are also very much inclined towards art and culture. They enjoy listening to music and they love reading. The people have a very British Taste and the upbringing is also such. My city Kolkata is a beautiful city and it lightens up during the nine days of Durga Pooja, where no one works but enjoy the festival to the fullest.
History
Kolkata was earlier the capital of India during the British Raj but Delhi became the capital of India because it was in the center and it was logistically convenient for the British government to rule from there. Job Charnock was the founder of the city. The city was recognized only in the 1960’s. it was earlier ruled by the Mughal emperors. In 1850, Calcutta had two areas divided between the Indians and the British and it was known as White town and Black town. Calcutta also has a port and it was used for various reasons. The port was also bombed several times by the Japanese in between the years 1942 and 1944. In 1943, many people living in Bengal died because of the Famine. After independence, the city saw a lot of growth. The city is also very politically inclined.
Art and Culture
The culture of Kolkata is unique and people love eating and celebrating. The famous festival of Kolkata is Durga Pooja which is nine days long function and the people of the state and the city celebrates it with joy and excitement. Bengal is also famous for its seafood. It is also famous for its heritage, literacy, and art. The city was also known as the ‘city of furious, creative energy’. The great and legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray comes from Bengal and he has given the world the best cinema. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore was born in Bengal. The city is extremely high in its culture and art. It has many museums and art galleries that can be explored. The city also has many theatres. The Kalighat painting is a famous painting, which was established in the 19th century. The place is also famous for its sweets.
Sports
Kolkata is one of the places that is also inclined towards sports and especially football. Cricket is undoubtedly the most played game as the British played here and it is the home ground of cricket for the country. The Eden gardens are the most popular stadium and people has a lot of memories associated with this stadium. The people also play other sports but cricket and football dominate the area.
Language
The people of Kolkata speaks Bengali as it is their regional language and it is the spoken language. The people also speak Hindi and English.
